Sumatra is the home of the former
head hunters and cannibals of the Batak, the home of the matriarchal people called
Minangkabau and the long-isolated indigenous groups that live in the rural jungle down at the shores.
Sumatra is the largest entirly Indonesian island, stretching nearly 2000km from Banda Aceh in the North
to Bakauheni in the south, with the equator cutting the island nearly in the middle.
The remains of the vast rain forests of Sumatra are famous all over the world as they host some of the
most endangered and rare animal and plant species on Earth. The island is home of the hornbill, Sumatra elephant,
the Sumatra orang-utan and the extremely rare and endangered Sumatra tigers, as well as the Sumatra rhino.
Among the plants are the Raflessia Arnoldi, the largest flower in the world, as well as the Titan Arum,
with the largest inflorescence in the world, the biggest attractions. Unfortunately, Sumatra is better known today for
the burning of precious rain forests and extinction of rare species.
