Bukit Lawang is located
at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park, the last
strongholds of tropical South East Asian rainforest containing critically endangered and extremely rare flora and fauna.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site with its ancient forest inhabits
some extremely rare species, such as the Sumatra tiger, the Sumatra rhinoceros and the Sumatra Elephant.
However, chances of seeing these reclusive animals are low as their population numbers are are very small.
But the chances of seeing orangutans at the Bahorok Orangutan Rehabilation Center are perfect.
Here orangutans are held that are born
in captivity, and are gradually reintroduced to live in the wilderness of Sumatra. This is a very
difficult task because the orangutans do not know how they can nourish themselves in nature.
Visitors in Bukit Lawang have the opportunity to watch orangutans live in the jungle at wild feeds. This is probably the
most accesibly place in the world to see these primates.
The protected reserve also provides camping grounds for visitors, as well as a series of guesthouses build directly
in the jungle. A river with clear water runs alongside the rim of the reserve,
where we can see many fishes darting and swimming around. Have a walk in the nearer area or book a trekking tour
that lasts for several days and experience the real jungle feeling.
There is a direct bus connections to travel from Medan's Pinang Baris bus terminal to Bukit Lawang ever 30 minutes (Rp. 8.000). The more comfortable travel alternative again is a taxi, that costs about Rp. 300.000 from Medan. The tour takes 3 to 4 hours.
