Bunaken Island is inhabited by about 3,000 people. It is famous all over the world
for its magnificent coral reefs opposite Manado harbor in the north of the city.
The reefs are 10 kilometres long, measured from the Eastern tip to the Western. They
are located in a marine park that is internationally acclaimed as one of the best in the
world. At Liang Bay you will be able to see fishes of all colours, shapes and sizes with naked
eyes, when they dart around among the coral stands. You can enjoy the wonders of Bunaken by
taking a ride on a glass-bottomed boat, by snorkelling or skin-diving. Some fish species are
found nowhere else. And not less attractive are the white sandy beaches.
The airport of Manado is your gateway to Pulau Bunaken. This airport serves mainly domestic
flights, but is at least well connected within Indonesia. Lion Air flies daily and directly from Jakarta and Denpasar,
and several times a week from Singapore to Manado. See the web site of
Ticket Indonesia in order to check all domestic flights to Manado.
After having arrived in Manado, you need to go to the harbour, where once a day in the morning a public boat
leaves towards Pulau Bunaken. But it might be more advisable to take one of the chartered boats, which will
be offered to you when walking at the harbour. Depending on the size and number of passenger seats of these boats,
prices vary from Rp. 150,000 to 500,000 one way.
When entering the Bunaken National Marine Park you should be prepared to pay a entrance fee of Rp 50,000 per daily ticket.
This fee is used for conservation programs in the marine park.
