Papua’s former name was Irian Jaya. It is located in the west of New Guinea, which
is the second largest island in the world. The west is part of Indonesia while the state
of Papua New Guinea occupies the east. The island is mainly covered by unexploited jungle
where indigenous people still live as in the past despite harsh conditions and rapid modernization.

This is the home of the Dani people who live in the magnificent beauty of Baliem Valley, the Asmat
and who are famous as world-class artists with their magic wooden sculptures, and also of an
indigenous group that lives in tree houses, known as the Korowai people.
