SERAM ISLAND - Manusela National Park

Seram island is mountainous and covered with tropical rainforest and populated only very slight. The highest mountain of the island is Gunung Binaiya with 3027 meters in the middle of the island. The area around the mountain is protected by the National Park Manusela. Manusela was Maluku's first national park. It covers a huge chunk of Central Seram's interior. The park offers great scenery and good but very tough hiking treks. The most popular trek starts at Hatumeti on the south coast, and leads to Wahai in the north. This punishingly masochistic adventure takes about a week! Guides and porters are necessary, but accommodation can be found in villages along the way. A tempting diversion from this trail can be climbing Gunung Binaya. Seram is famous for its 21 species of endemic birds, including the spectacular Moluccan Cockatoo, which can be watched along the treck.

  • The hardcore way to explore Seram is the complete crossing of the island via the Manusela National Park, of course. This trek needs at least 6 days, but you should plan with one or two days more.
    In order to enter the Manusela National Park, a permit from KSDA office in Ambon is required.
    Once arrived in the town Masohi on Seram island, you have two possibilities to approach the Manusela National Park. In order to enter the park from the North, take a bus from Masohi to Saka, and from there take a boat to Wahai. For the Southern approach take a bus from Masohi to Tehoru and from there continue by boat to Mosso.
    Trekking guides can be found in Wahai, in Mosso, in many other villages on the way as well as directly in Ambon.
    There is no tourist infrastructure available, as there are only very few foreigners visiting Mansuela National Park. This makes the tour more intersting and adventurous, but on the other side you can not count on having hotels available. You can sleep and eat in the villages on the trek, but accommodation and food are very simple.
  • If you don't want to take the above described hardcore trekking tour, it is also possible to hire a guide for only one or two days, and to walk a while through the unspoiled nature of the park, watching birds and butterflies.

Getting there & Around

The best way to reach Seram island is via speedboat from Ambon to Masohi. Several services run on a daily basis. The trip takes about 2.5 hours and costs around Rp. 75,000.
Ambon itself is well connected inside Indonesia via its airport.
