Located in the peninsula on the south coast of the world´s third largest tropical rain forest of Borneo, in Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan, the park consist of 300.040 hectares (741,100 acres). The Tanjung Puting National Park is very well-known and popular as a world-class reserve. The park is a nature and wildlife reserve for lowland and swamp forests, inhabited by orangutans, owa-owas, bekantans and other primates. The park was set aside in the 1930s by the Dutch colonial government for the protection of the orangutans and proboscis monkey, and was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a national park in 1982. Various rare bird species can also be found in the area. The Danau Burung (Bird Lake) is a heaven for many thousands of birds. Groups of rare turtles are found along the coast. The Southern part of Tanjung Puting is bordered by the coastal area that is facing the Java Sea. Here, Bogam Bay is a popular and pleasant seaside resort. To the North you find the Kumai River with a very beautiful scenery.
The way to Tanjung Puting National Park goes via the town of Pangkalan Bun. Pangkalan Bun
can be reached by air with two airlines,
Kal Star Aviation and
Trigana Air.

In order to enter the park you first need to register an Pangkalan Bun police station. Bring
a photocopy of your passport and visa. Second, visit the PHKA office (national park office)
where you have to register for Rp. 70,000. You need again a photocopy of your passport and visa.
Third, head to the town of Kumai, either by angkot (Rp. 7,500), or by taxi (Rp. 70,000). From Kumai
you can arrange the transport upriver via a klotok. A klotok is a wooden river boat with a roof. From
there the sourrounding flora and fauna can be viewed perfectly. It costs around Rp. 700,000 a day
including food.
You should plan at least 3 days on the river, where you visit the various research camps for
orang utan watching. The oldes most
famous is Camp Leakey, but meanwhile several other camps are also well established. In order to
get to the orang utan feeding stations, you will have a small walk through the jungle.
IMPORTANT. Bring closed boots and insect repelent.
Never swim in the river, unless you want to be a crocodiles breakfast.
