One of the most famous landmarks of South Kalimantan is Banjarmasin with
it´s labyrinth of canals and it´s floating market.
It is a traditional market on the Kuin River. At daybreak, boats come from nearby
villages and bring vegetables, fruits, spices and chillies, fish and shrimp, and other daily needs. Buyers also come to the
market in small boats and close their transactions on the water. As day breaks, the
atmosphere becomes more cheerful. The number of buyers and boats increases. At a little past
noon, the market quietens down. And empty boats leave. The best time to see market in action
is in the early morning, between 6 a.m and 7 a.m.
Banjarmasin is well connected within Indonesia. Syamsudin Noor Airport, which is 26km from town, serves flights to
many cities and Trisakti harbour receives Pelni ships from Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang.
An alternative is the Dharma Kencana ferry service, which goes to Surabaya.
