BOROBUDUR - Mystery in Stone

Borobudur is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. The colossal pyramid looms out of a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palm tops. The stupa was built probably 750-850 during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty. As the center of power of Java in the 10th and 11 Century moved to the East (perhaps in conjunction with the eruption of Merapi in 1006), the temple was forgotten and was buried by volcanic ash and vegetation. It was rediscovered in 1814, and many years later from 1973 on a restoration program brought large parts of the site back to former glory. Borobudur was recognized in 1991 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Today, Borobudur is one of the main attractions in Indonesia. Visitors can walk through narrow corridors with thousands of decorativ stone carvings, exposing the largest and most complete ensemble of Buddhist relief in the world. This pilgrim walk is about 5km long. The best time for a visit is at dawn or sunset, as if you travel at these times you will be able to catch something of the spirit of this majestetic temple. The ticket includes entrance to Karmawibhangga Archieological Museum, which is near to the temple and shows tools and equipment from the restoration of the temple as well as many original stone carvings. If you travel to Indonesia, don′t miss this attraction.

Getting there

Travellers reach the site of Borobudur temple either from Yogjakarta (45km) or from Magelang (10km).
To travel by taxi from Yogja for that trip should cost no more than Rp. 150,000 (one way / tour takes 45 minutes). However, it is strongly recommended to negotiate the price beforehand, as many taxi drivers in Indonesia tend to ask higher prices for tourists. A much cheaper alternative for the trip from Yogjakarta is taking a bus from Umbulharjo bus station (Rp. 10.000 / 1.5 hours). The bus station at Borobudur is in a 1km walking distance from the site. Furthermore, many tour operators offer complete tour packages that are very competitive and include hints and tips form native people. Therefore, see the link list below.
Magelang is much nearer to Borobudur temple, so taking a taxi for this short trip is most recommendable.
